Rahul, who is not already a part of the T20 squad, had reportedly expressed his desire to take a break from ODIs as well after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Although the selection committee had initially approved the request, it later changed its position and requested Rahul to be available for the ODI series against England starting on February 6.
Rahul’s presence is necessary for Team India
According to the Times of India report, the selection committee took this decision with the aim of giving Rahul some match practice before the Champions Trophy. The three-match ODI series will be the last chance for India to finalize the team combination. Champions Trophy is starting from 19th February. Reports have also revealed that this decision of BCCI has been taken to give match practice to Rahul and keep him ahead of Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson as the main wicketkeeper in ODIs. Rahul’s performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the year before that was good, due to which his chances of playing are strong. With India having not played an ODI since August 7, the selectors wanted Rahul to be available for the England series so that he could prepare for the upcoming tournament.
