Karachi bakery: The famous Karachi Bakery of Hyderabad has once again come under controversy. After India’s retaliation on terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir on 7 May, some activists demonstrated at an outlet of the bakery demanding to change its name. The protesters said that an Indian bakery should not be named after any city in Pakistan.
Owners clarified – Karachi bakery symbol of heritage
Bakery owners Rajesh and Harish Ramnani told the media that Karachi Bakery was started in 1953 by his grandfather Kanchand Ramnani, when he settled in India from Karachi city of Pakistan during the 1947 partition. He said that this name is associated with our heritage and memory of our grandfather. Karachi Bakery has a deep connection with India, it is a completely Indian brand.
Sought security from government
The owners appealed to Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and senior officials of the administration that we are Indians, please help us save our brand. We are being forced to change the name. People are showing support by applying tricolor at all our outlets.
Public support on social media
A large number of people also appeared on social media in support of the bakery. One user wrote that the owner of the bakery brand is Sindhi who came to India from Karachi at the time of partition. Please do not make such childish demands.
Another user said that Karachi is a city, no patriotism is decided by the name. Army will deal with the enemies of the country, common people support people who live in India and love India.
Protests have been faced before
This is not the first time Karachi Bakery has faced such opposition. After the Pulwama attack in 2019, a demonstration was held at an outlet in Indiranagar, Bangalore. Then the bakery had to cover the word ‘Karachi’ on his signboard and put an Indian tricolor.
Indian taste and identity of bakery
Karachi Bakery is known for her Usmania biscuits and fruit biscuits. It has outlets in many cities of the country including Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru. Despite all the controversies, its owners want to keep the identity and history of their brand.
