ITR Filing 2025: The time to file income tax return (ITR) has come close. If you are going to file returns for the first time, the first step is- registration on the ITR portal. This portal was created by the Income Tax Department, which is completely digital. This made the filing process faster and easier. Why is registration on ITR portal necessary?
The simple and simple answer to this is that you cannot file returns without registration. So you have to register first. After registration, you can login and get services like ITR filing, refund status, pre -return, notice response.
How to register on ITR portal?
You will need some documents for registration on the ITR portal. Such as PAN card, active mobile number and email ID. Also, your PAN and Aadhaar link should be. If this does not happen, the Income Tax Department may be rejected even after filing ITR.
Registration process on ITR portal
- Go to the official portal and click on ‘Register’.
- Choose the option ‘Register as Taxpayer’, enter PAN and click on ‘Validate’.
- Fill details like name, date of birth, gender and residential status.
- Enter mobile number, email address. OTP will come on both.
- Enter OTP of 6 digits on mobile and email (within 15 minutes).
- Confirm details and set the password.
- The password has 8 to 14 characters. At least one capital, a small letter, a number and a special character.
- After this, click on ‘Register’ and then ‘Proceed to Login’.
Now your ITR portal has been registered. Now you can start using the portal.

If ITR files after the deadline passes, then a penalty of up to ₹ 5,000 may be imposed. Therefore, it is very important to file your income tax return on time.

This portal has been built under the National E-Governance Plan of the Government of India. Its purpose is to provide all services to taxpayers from the same digital platform. Such as:
