Iran has expelled more than 5 lakh Afghan citizens from the country in just 16 days. This action took place between 24 June to 9 July. That is, on an average, more than 30,000 Afghans were expelled from the country every day.
The United Nations has described it as one of the biggest forced withdrawal of the decade. Iran is taking strict action against migrants citing internal security after a tense struggle with Israel.
Iran announced in March 2025 that the Afghan migrants living illegally left the country by 6 July, otherwise they would be forcibly evacuated.
But in June, the campaign intensified after a 12 -day military conflict between Iran and Israel.

Iran claims that some Afghan citizens were spying for Israel. However, strong evidence of this charge has not yet been revealed.
The refugee said- We were kept hungry, beaten, robbed
Speaking to the media, an Afghan refugee Bashir, who was deported from Iran, told that the officials asked for 17 thousand rupees from him. Then kept two days in the detention center. During this time, Bashir was neither given food nor water. According to Bashir, the officials abused him.
Another young man said that his father was caught on charges of espionage and tied into the fetters. He was not given food and water and later detailed and sent to Afghanistan.
Talking to The Guardian, an Afghan woman said that Iranian officials came to the night. They did not even let the children take clothes. Threw us like a garbage. On the way, took out the money from the bank card. 80 rupees for water bottle and 170 rupees for sandwich.
People extracted from Iran have hundreds of minor children, many of whom are orphans and alone.
According to UN, hundreds of children are being found on the border without parents every week. The UN officer Mihyong Park told CNN that the number is shocking.

Due to the Taliban rule in Afghanistan, women are not allowed to travel without men, and in such a situation they can be punished.
Accused detective confessed to the crime on TV
On Iran’s official channel, an Afghan citizen was shown confessing for Israel.
He said that an Afghan living in Germany asked him to give information about some places and gave 2 thousand dollars. But his name, concrete evidence and the process were not told anything.
United Nations Afghanistan Special Representative Richard Bennet wrote on X-

Hundreds of Afghans have been caught by spying. In the media, he is being addressed as a traitor and insects.
Afghan citizen’s return intensified from Pakistan
In 2025, 16 lakh Afghans have been sent back in 2025, including Iran and Pakistan.
UNHCR fears that this figure may go up to 30 lakhs by the end of the year.
