Sumit Nagal
India’s leading tennis player Sumit Nagal was eliminated after losing in the first round of Australian Open 2025 on January 12. In the men’s singles match held at Melbourne Park, Nagal lost 6-3, 6-1, 7-5 against Tomas Machak of Czech Republic. With this defeat, 27-year-old Sumit Nagal was eliminated from the singles competition in the first Grand Slam event of the 2025 season. Last year he had reached the second round of the Australian Open, but this time he had to face defeat against Machak.
How was the competition?
Mahach, who was brilliant in 2024, was at his best right from the start. He won the first two sets without any resistance. However, Nagal made a brilliant comeback in the third set and took a 4-1 lead. But then he had trouble winning break points, due to which he lost the match in the last set. This was Nagal and Machak’s first meeting, in which Machak won 78% of first-serve points and 7 out of 15 break points. Nagal did well with his serve in the end, but he failed to make a single ace in the entire match and made 20 unforced errors. This match lasted for a total of 2 hours 5 minutes.
There were many ups and downs on the first day
There were no major upsets on the first day at Melbourne Park. Defending women’s singles champion Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the second round by defeating Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-2. The Bella Russian star is now looking for her third consecutive women’s singles title at the Australian Open. She will face Spain’s Jessica Baujas Manero in the second round. On the same day, last season’s runner-up and world number 5 player Qianwen Zheng entered the second round by defeating Anca Todoni 7-6, 6-1.
