China is working on a project related to generating electricity on the Yarlup Tyangpo (Brahmaputra) river in Tibet.

China has responded to India’s objection to building a dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) river in Tibet. According to Global Times, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Yaqun said that building a dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River will not affect the water flow of India or Bangladesh.

Spokesperson Yakun said that a complete scientific review of this project has been done. This will not cause any harm to the eco system, on the contrary this project will help in preventing disaster to some extent. Yakun said that this project of China will balance climate change in the low-lying areas.

Last month, China had approved a hydropower project on the Brahmaputra river. Under this, the world’s largest dam is being built on Brahmaputra. China is going to spend approximately 137 billion US dollars (about Rs 12 lakh crore) on this dam. China wants to generate 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually from here.

Currently, the world's largest hydroelectric power station, 'Three Gorges' Dam, is built on the Yangtze River in Hubei province of China. Its annual capacity is 88 billion kilowatt hours.

Why is India opposing the dam? The dam to be built on the Brahmaputra River will be built in the vast valley of the Himalayas at the eastern end of the Tibet Plateau. Earthquakes occur frequently in this area. Construction of dam can put pressure on the ecosystem which can lead to many accidents.

The north-eastern states of India and Bangladesh are already facing severe flood events and due to climate change they may face more challenges like landslides, earthquakes and floods etc. This is the reason why India’s concern has increased due to the construction of this dam.

The spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs had raised objections about this dam in a press briefing on 3 January. India had said that building a dam on the Brahmaputra should not harm the interests of the downstream states.

China said – approved after several decades of research China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said last week that China has always taken responsibility for the development of cross-border rivers. Hydropower development in Tibet has been approved after decades of in-depth study. Its construction will not affect the people living in the lower areas.

Spokesman Mao had said that China is ready to continue talks with the border countries. He also said that China will work with countries located along the lower rivers to help in earthquake and disaster management so that people living along the river banks can benefit.

The Brahmaputra (Yarlung Tsangpo) river originates from the Angsi Glacier near Mount Kailash in Tibet and extends for about three thousand kilometers. After coming to India, this river is known as Brahmaputra. When it reaches Bangladesh it is called Jamuna.
