Muhammad Yunus, the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, has sent 1,000 kg of mangoes of ‘Haribhanga’. They will be gifted to PM Modi, India’s diplomats and other officials.
As part of an attempt to improve relations with India, this initiative of Bangladesh is being called ‘Mango Diplomacy’.
Under this, the interim government has sent Haribhana mangoes not only to the central government, but also to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha.
These 300 kg mango mangoes were packed in 60 coaches and sent through Akhaura land port at around 5:15 pm on Thursday evening.

Yunus continued the tradition of sending mangoes
‘Haribhanga’ premium is considered common in Bangladesh. Their quality is considered very good. It is very much liked in India.
According to a report by Bangladeshi newspaper Daily Sun, an official of Bangladesh High Commission said that they have been sent as a symbol of common goodwill and are scheduled to reach New Delhi on Monday.
This tradition of sending mangoes from Bangladesh to India is not new. Earlier governments have also been sending mangoes to India. But this time this step is being considered special because Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had to withdraw from power after major protests led by students last year.
After her withdrawal, India and Bangladesh had a short distance in relations, as Hasina was considered close to India. In such a situation, questions were arising whether this tradition would be continued or it would be closed.
Hilsa fish supply was banned
The interim government of Bangladesh stopped the export of Hilsa fish to India in September last year. Its purpose was to ensure the supply of Hilsa fish in the domestic market.
This fish, which comes every year before Durga Puja, is not only famous because of the taste, but had become a special identity of the Indo-Bangladesh relationship, which is called ‘Hilsa Diplomacy’.
This was the first time after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024, when Hilsa exports were completely banned.
It is worth noting that Bangladesh has been sending Hilsa fish from 1,500 to 2,000 tonnes to India every year before Durga Puja.
This tradition started during the Sheikh Hasina government. The ban on the Yunus government was considered to be the bitterness between India-Bangladesh.
However, on September 21, Bangladesh lifted the ban and approved to send 3000 tonnes of Hilsa fish to India.
Trying to improve relations between India-Bangladesh
PM Modi and interim Prime Minister Yunus had the last meeting during the BIMSTEC conference in Bangkok in April. The meeting was his first direct conversation after Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s eviction from power.
Not only is the geographical proximity between India and Bangladesh, but historical, cultural and economic relations are also very deep. Both countries share more than 4000 km long border, which is the longest border with any other neighboring country in India.
The borders of Bangladesh connect with India and Myanmar, but only 94 percent of the total border is attached to India. For this reason, Bangladesh is also often called ‘India-locked’ country, because most of its ground contacts are possible only through India.

India’s largest trade partner in Bangladesh, South Asia Bangladesh has emerged as an important economic partner for India. It is India’s largest trade partner in South Asia, while India is the second largest trading partner in Bangladesh in Asia. Business between the two countries is continuously increasing.
Bangladesh became India’s fifth largest export market in FY 2022-23. The total bilateral trade between India-Bangladesh reached $ 15.9 billion that year.
It mainly exports textile, machinery, agricultural appliances, petroleum products, chemicals and auto parts from India to Bangladesh, while Bangladesh exports clothes, jute products, and seafoods in India.
Apart from these deep trading relationships, the two countries also have amazing similarities in the language, religion, food, music and literature.
