Tomato prices in Noida market have reached Rs 90 kg. The Noida unit of the National Cooperative Consumers Federation (NCCF) has started selling tomatoes at subsidized rates to give relief to the common man from the rising prices of tomatoes. NCCF is selling tomatoes at a price of Rs 48 per kg. He says that tomatoes are expected to come soon from Karnataka. Sales are limited to one kilogram per person. NCCF has started selling tomatoes at a discounted rates in Noida market from Monday. Tomatoes are available in Noida market for Rs 80 to 90 per kg.
NCCF, working under the Consumer Affairs Ministry, received a stock of 1,620 kg. Apart from the outlet at Sector 4, it was sent to various parts of the city including Sector 75, Sector 19, Sector 63, Golf Course Road and Atta Market.
Sumit Kumar, District in charge of NCCF Noida, said, ‘Tomato prices started rising in Delhi-NCR in a week. The Federation then offered consumers to sell tomatoes at a cheap rate. He said that he was ordered Karnataka in Delhi-NCR due to lack of tomatoes. In the coming days, more concession is expected and as the supply increases, the price will also decrease.
However, this initiative of the federation does not seem to have much effect and on Monday, less people reached the outlet of Sector 4. Arjun Chaudhary, a resident of Sector 4, said that he has come to hear about getting tomatoes at a cheaper price from the neighbor. He appreciated the government’s initiative to provide tomatoes at a cheap rate. Another resident Rewa said that tomatoes are our everyday need which is used in lentils, vegetables, chutney. He bought a kilo of tomatoes at cheap prices and hoped to reduce prices soon.
Often, tomato prices rise due to crop failure or other meteorological problems during the monsoon season. Pankaj Sharma, secretary of Noida Flowers and Vegetable Market, said that about 1000 kg of tomatoes come from Madhya Pradesh and Nashik daily. Prices usually increase in the monsoon, but there is no significant reduction of tomatoes.
