Tomato and Potato Homemade food became expensive in December due to increase in the prices of commonly used kitchen food items. The average cost of preparing a vegetarian thali rose six per cent to Rs 31.6 per plate in December, compared to Rs 29.7 per plate in the same period a year ago, the report by a unit of rating agency CRISIL said. However, this price is lower than the rate of Rs 32.7 in the month of November. In its Roti, Chawal, Taar report, which assesses the common man’s expenditure on food, CRISIL found that the cost of a non-vegetarian thali rose 12 per cent year-on-year and three per cent month-on-month to Rs 63.3 in December.

Tomato prices increased by 24 percent

Explaining the reasons for food items becoming costlier, the report said tomato prices rose 24 per cent to Rs 47 per kg in December, while potato prices rose 50 per cent to Rs 36 per kg. The report says that due to increase in import duty by the government, the price of vegetable oil has increased by 16 percent, which has increased the problems for the common man. From an annual perspective, the 11 per cent decline in LPG fuel rates has helped mitigate the impact of higher costs, the report said. In the case of non-vegetarian thali, the price of broiler increased by 20 per cent, which has 50 per cent weightage in calculating the overall food cost. The surge in poultry prices is due to the former’s low base, the report said. Tomato prices fell 12 per cent compared to November amid fresh supplies from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat, which helped reduce the cost of vegetarian thali by three per cent.

Non-vegetarian plate also became expensive

It said a 12 per cent fall in onion prices and two per cent fall in potato prices helped bring down prices between November and December. It said broiler prices increased by 11 per cent due to cold wave-related decline in production, increase in festive and wedding demand and higher feed costs, leading to a three per cent increase in the cost of non-vegetarian thali in December.
