Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has accused the interim government chief Mohammad Yunus of selling the country to the US. They said,
My father did not agree with the demands laid on the American Island of America. They had to pay the price of it by giving their lives. I never even imagined selling the country to stay in power.
Hasina claimed that Yunus has handed over the reins of the government to the terrorists. The former PM said in a post on his party’s Facebook account that Yunus has occupied power with the help of terrorists.
Hasina claimed that Yunus has released them. Today the jails are empty.
America was asking for St. Martin Island from Bangladesh
In June 2021, Bangla newspapers claimed that the US was demanding St. Martin Island from Bangladesh. He wants to build a military base here.
After this, Rashid Khan Menon, President of Bangladesh Workers Party also said in Parliament that the US wants to achieve the island of St. Martin and is pressurizing to become a member of the Quad.
St. Martin Island, which created so much uproar in Bangladesh politics, is only an island of only 3 sq km. Its distance from Myanmar is just 5 miles. On June 2023, PM Hasina said that if the opposition BNP party comes to power, he will sell St. Martin.
Why does America eye on the island of St. Martin?
After its independence in 1971, the two powerful countries of the world, America and China, who are trading through the Bay of Bengal, are eyeing this island. America may have two main reasons for getting interested in this island…
1. Defense Expert J.S. According to Sodhi, in 2023, China has built a new port in Bangladesh’s Cox Bazaar. Two submarines of Chinese marines are deployed here. China is easily supplying its logistics from here.
2. Most of the businesses of China are from Malacca Strait. 50% of the world’s total trade reaches from one part of the world to another through the Bay of Bengal.
For these two reasons, it is possible that America wants to build a base here to increase its strength in the Bay of Bengal. It is possible that the US wants to make its presence here to challenge China’s dominance in the Bay of Bengal and Prashant, the Bay of Bengal after South China Sea.
Army increased patrolling in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, the army has increased patrolling in different parts of the country. A report by the Dhaka Tribune states that the army has intensified its campaigns in the last few days.
According to the report, the army has also increased deployment at many places. Military personnel are seen active across the country with armored vehicles.
The army together arrested more than 2 thousand people along with agencies to maintain law and order.
Since its deployment in August last year, the army has so far detained more than 10,000 people.
Yunus will continue to remain the Chief Advisor to the Government of Bangladesh
Mohammad Yunus, the chief advisor of the government, will continue to be in his post amid the ongoing political upheaval in Bangladesh. Earlier it was believed that he could resign due to political and military pressure.
Mohammad Yunus convened a meeting of the Advisory Council on Saturday. After this meeting, Planning Advisor Wahiduddin Mahmood said- Mohammad Yunus will remain with us.
He said that we have also been given new responsibilities. According to the news agency UNB, there will be a meeting with the ministers soon after a meeting of the Advisory Council.
At the same time, Army Chief Waqar-e-Z-Zaman has clearly given an ultimatum to hold elections by December. On the other hand, discussions between opposition parties BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami are being discussed and struggle strategies on the streets.
Student organizations said- if justice is not found, democracy will become a joke
The National Citizen Party (NSP), Jamaat-e-Islami student wing student Shibir and leftist student organizations have unanimously said that unless the violence and murders during the previous government are impartially investigated, there is no meaning of election.
NCP student leader Nahid Islam says that if all the sections of the country do non -cooperation in this way, Dr. Yunus will resign. We have requested them not to resign, but justice is necessary before the election.
The student organizations are angry about the massacre by Awami League in July 2024. He says that democracy will become a joke without justice.
BNP bid- any government illegal without election
Former PM Khaleda Zia’s party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has demanded an immediate election roadmap from Dr. Younus’s government. Party General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the support of the current government is not possible without roadmap.
According to sources, there have been 4 meetings between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami last week, in which the strategy of the movement was discussed. Under the pressure of the army, the speculation of Dr. Yunus’s resignation has intensified.
At the same time, there is a discussion that they can try to form a national government again by talking to political parties without holding elections. The BNP has made it clear that it will not consider any national government valid without elections.
Khaleda Jia also reiterated the demand for elections in December
Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s BNP has also reiterated the demand for elections in December, increasing the pressure on Younus. The party has warned that if the government does not make an election roadmap soon and makes it public announcement, then it will be difficult to continue cooperation with the government.
The head of the interim government, Yunus, has so far asked to hold elections between January-June 2026. The army is angry at pulling it forward from December 2025. Due to this, further conflicts can be intensified. Apart from Yunus, radical Jamaat-e-Islami is also in favor of postponing elections.
Sources are indicating that the government was expected to persist for five years, which has put the pressure of the army-students in a serious crisis. Advisors of the Ministry of Home Affairs have also said that the public wants this government to remain for five years. The general officials even said that if the government is adamant, the situation may be uncontrollable.
