Silver jewelry hallmarking: The government is soon going to take a big step regarding the purity of silver jewelery. From 1 September 2025, the new rule of hallmarking on silver jewelery may apply. This rule will currently be voluntary. That is, if the customer wants, buy hallmark jewelery or take jewelery without hallmark, this will be their option. This will not be mandatory. This process would be exactly the same as it was started for gold jewelery.
What is a new change?
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has set 6 purity levels for silver. It is 900, 800, 835, 925, 970 and 990. Now a 6 -digit hallmark unique ID will be given on every silver jewelery. This ID will easily know how pure the jewelery is. Whether silver jewelery is real or not. This method will replace the old hallmarking system.
What is hallmarking?
Hallmarking means guarantee of metal purity. It is a government process, in which precious metals like gold or silver are tested and certified. BIS’s hallmarking scheme decides that the customer gets the same quality for which he is paying the money.
What will be the benefit of customers?
With this new rule, customers will avoid fraud. There is often a possibility of adulteration in jewelery without hallmarks. But now such danger will be less in hallmark silver. The most important thing is that customers can go to the Bis Care App and check the verified HUID feature immediately whether the hallmark written on the jewelry is real or fake.
The rule was applied earlier on gold
In 2021, the government made hallmarking mandatory on gold jewelery. This rule is also being brought on silver jewelery on the same lines. This will make the jewelery market more transparent and will also increase the confidence of customers.
Will it change after 1 September?
From September 1, the customer will have the option to buy silver with hallmark or without hallmark. But the hope is that people will now trust more on hallmark jewelery. This will not only benefit the customers, but will also increase trust in the jewelery industry.
