In fact, Central GST officials have detected GST theft of more than Rs 1.88 lakh crore during April-December 2024. According to PTI news, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary gave this information to the Lok Sabha on Monday.

132 arrests and recovery of Rs 20,128 crore

According to the news, GST theft including ITC fraud in 72,393 cases between April and December was Rs 1.88 lakh crore. During this period 132 arrests were made and Rs 20,128 crore was recovered. In FY 2023-24, CGST officials detected GST theft of Rs 2.30 lakh crore in 20,582 cases. 31,758 crore was recovered and 223 people were arrested. In 2022-23 and 2021-22, CGST officials detected GST theft of Rs 1.32 lakh crore and Rs 73,238 crore respectively.

Taxes are under four main slabs

Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said that taxes are imposed under four main slabs under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) – 5 percent, 12 percent, 18 percent and 28 percent. Three special rates of gold, silver, diamonds and jewelery and cut and polished diamonds and raw diamonds are implemented 3 percent, 1.5 percent and 0. 25 percent of three special rates. Separately, GST compensation cess is applied only to different rates on tobacco and tobacco products, aerated drinks and vehicles etc.

Theft caught in the campaign conducted

To detect fake registrations, central and state GST officials carried out two special campaigns in 2023 from May to August and August 2024 from August to October. In the first campaign against fake registration, 21,808 non-existent GSTINs were found and tax evasion of Rs 24,357 crore was detected. Eight people were arrested in this regard. In the second campaign, 68,393 non-existent GSTINs were found and tax evasion of Rs 25,346 crore was detected. 19 people were arrested.
