The Central Government has once again shown strictness on OTT platforms. The government has released another new guidelines for OTT platforms. The Minister of Information and Broadcasting has asked the OTT platforms in its guidelines to strictly follow the IT Act 2021. The Central Government has recently asked social media platforms to avoid broadcasting such content in the midst of controversy over pornographic jokes through the show ‘India Got Latent’ show.

MIB has asked to strictly follow the age-based classification of content to be broadcast in its guidelines. The Ministry also asked the self -regulatory institutions of the OTT platform to take appropriate action actively on the violation of the code of conduct. The ministry said that it had received complaints from MPs and statutory organizations about the alleged spread of pornographic content by some OTT and social media platforms. Also, public complaints have also been received.
MIB said in the guidelines, ‘It is advisable in view of these things that when transmitting OTT platform content, follow the prescribed code of conduct under various provisions of laws and IT Rules, 2021, in which materials prescribed under the Code of Conduct Strict adherence to age-based classification is also included.
Avoid broadcasting porn content
It states that along with other things in the code of conduct, it is expected from the OTT platform not to transmit any material prohibited by the law. Also, based on the general guidelines given in the schedule of rules, the age-based classification of the material and also use proper precautions and discretion.
This consultation has been issued by the Supreme Court in view of the suggestion of regulating the content on social media platforms. Let me tell you that the apex court had underlined the lack of provision in the law in the case of sharing content on a platform like YouTube.
