The accused was living in Germany since 2006
The accused in the Christmas market attack is a Saudi Arabian national who had been living in Germany’s eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt since 2006. It was granted refugee status in 2016. The Premier of Saxony-Anhalt said after the arrest of the accused that the attacker carried out the incident alone. The motive behind the attack could not be known.

The Indian government has also strongly condemned this attack. The Indian Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing grief over the incident. The ministry said in its statement-
We strongly condemn this horrific attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany. Many precious lives have been lost in this attack, and many people have been injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.
The ministry said the Indian mission is in touch with the injured Indian nationals and their families. All possible help is being provided to them. Of the 7 Indian citizens injured, 3 have been discharged from the hospital.

In the CCTV footage, a high speed car is seen mowing down people.
The attacker had rented a BMW car before the attack. He was driving it at such a speed that it got badly damaged due to the collision.
Police and rescue teams reached the spot immediately after the incident.
World reaction to the attack
Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni strongly condemned the incident, calling it a brutal attack on innocents. The British Prime Minister described this as horrifying and promised to support Germany. Meanwhile, Tesla owner Elon Musk expressed his displeasure and demanded the resignation of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
A Christmas market is held every year in Magdeburg.
Magdeburg is the capital of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. The city is situated on the banks of the Elbe River and has a population of approximately 2.40 lakh.
The city is located about an hour and a half drive from Berlin. Magdeburg holds a Christmas market once a year and draws large crowds.
The attacker was not found to have any connection with fundamentalists.
According to The Guardian, the attacker’s name is Taleb. He is a psychiatrist. He was practicing medicine in Bernburg, about 40 kilometers from the city of Magdeburg. He had rented a BMW car before the attack. At present, no connection of the attacker with fundamentalists has been found.
13 people lost their lives in such an incident in 2016
The incident is reminiscent of a major terror incident that took place in Berlin on 19 December 2016, when an Islamic extremist drove a truck into a crowd at a Christmas market. 13 people had died and dozens were injured in the incident. That attacker was killed a few days later in a police encounter in Italy.
