Lalit Modi
New Delhi: Lalit Modi, the founder of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has applied to the Indian High Commission in London to submit his Indian passport. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed this on Friday. Lalit Modi has citizenship of South Pacific Island Rashtra Vanuatu. He left India in 2010 and is believed to have been living in London.
What did the Foreign Ministry say on Lalit Modi?
Lalit Modi is included in the desired list of Indian law enforcement agencies on charges of embezzlement of crores of rupees during his tenure as a top officer of IPL. Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said, “He has applied to submit his passport to the Indian High Commission in London.” He said, “It will be investigated under existing rules and procedures. We have also been told that he has achieved citizenship of Vanuatu. We will continue to advance the case against him under the law. ”
Lalit Modi on ED radar
Significantly, Lalit Modi, who ran from India in 2010, has been under the investigation of ED for many years amid allegations of financial misconduct, money laundering and violation of foreign exchange laws. Despite the frequent efforts of Indian officials, Lalit Modi has successfully escaped the prosecution. Therefore, after getting citizenship, now the Government of India and ED now have a big challenge to secure Lalit Modi’s extradition.
Explain that by attaining foreign citizenship, efforts to extradite them by India have become effectively complicated. Earlier, fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi had acquired Antigua’s citizenship to avoid law. (With language inputs)
