Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli
First Rohit Sharma and now Virat Kohli. The cricket world is surprised by the retirement of 2 veterans within a week. Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on 7 May and then on May 12, Virat Kohli also said goodbye to the Test. Both players played their last Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Australia tour. In this way, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy i.e. BGT once again put an end to the career of the legendary Indian players. This is not the first time that Indian players were forced to retire after poor performance in BGT. Many such examples have been seen in the past.
Ganguly’s retirement begins in a series
In Indian cricket history, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has proved to be a decisive turn of the career of many players, not just a series. This prestigious Test series has so far put a stop to the career of 9 Indian giants. Let’s know about those players who said goodbye to Test cricket after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
In 2008, Sourav Ganguly announced his retirement from international cricket during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. After that series, the brilliant career of ‘Dada’ ended. Not only Ganguly, BGT proved to be the last series for Anil Kumble. When Team India visited Australia in 2011-12, the series proved to be the last Test series for VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid. Both of them faded in that series and after returning, both veterans announced retirement.
Sehwag and Dhoni also left
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy played in India in 2012-13 proved to be the last stop of Virender Sehwag’s career. After this series, Sehwag was dropped from the team and then did not get a chance to return. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Test retirement also came during BGT. He played the last Test match against Australia at MCG. Now Rohit and Virat departed from the Test after BGT 2024-25. Prior to both the players, R Ashwin had said goodbye to international cricket amidst the tour of Australia.
It is worth noting that the Border-Gavaskar Trophy not only gave historical matches in Indian cricket, but this series also wrote the last chapter of the career of many great players. Now it will be interesting to see that next time this trophy proves decisive for whose career.
