VC Chandrakumar vs MK Sitalakshmi
The results of the by -election in Erode in Tamil Nadu will be released today. The counting of votes has started at eight in the morning. The ruling DMK (Dravid Munnetra Kazhagam) candidate VC Chandrakumar is more likely to win this seat. The election was boycotted by other opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party. Apart from DMK, only NTK (name Tamiller Kachchi) fielded its candidate. The party has given ticket to MK Sitalakshmi.
44 Independent candidates are also contesting by -elections from this seat. However, it will be difficult for any independent candidate to present a challenge to VC Chandrakumar. The by -election on this seat on Wednesday was 67.97 percent polling.
Why the by -election is being held?
By -elections are being held on this seat due to the death of Congress MLA EVKS Ilangovan. In Tamil Nadu, the Congress contested in an alliance with the DMK and won. Thirumhan Avera became an MLA from this seat in 2021, but died in January 2023. In the subsequent by -election, the Congress gave ticket to his father and former minister EVKS Alangovan and won the seat. However, he also died in December 2024 due to illness. After this, the Congress left this seat and the fellow party DMK fielded its candidate here in the coalition.
Why other opposition parties including BJP boycott
Opposition parties say that the ruling DMK uses money and muscle power to win the by -election. So he will not contest elections. Other opposition parties, including the BJP, have said to enter the electoral fray in the assembly elections to be held in 2026. The term of the winning candidate from this seat will be till 2026. Assembly elections are due in Tamil Nadu in 2026.
