The Election Commission on Tuesday responded to the questions raised by the Congress regarding the addition or deletion of names of voters in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The Election Commission said that the names of voters have neither been arbitrarily added nor removed from the voter list. The Commission termed these allegations of Congress as baseless and said that the entire process in this matter has been done transparently and as per the rules.

In its reply to the Congress, the Commission also said that it would not be correct to compare the voting figures at 5:00 pm with the final voting figures in the recently concluded assembly elections. The Congress had approached the Election Commission over various concerns related to the Maharashtra Assembly elections held in November. Issuing a detailed note, the Commission told the Congress that the increase in voting percentage from 5:00 pm to 11:45 pm was normal, which was part of the process of adding votes polled and the actual difference in votes cast and counted. , but there may be inconsistent differences.

Change in voting percentage?

The Commission stressed that it is impossible to change the actual voting percentage, as the statutory Form 17C giving details of voter turnout is available with the authorized agent of the candidates at the time of closure of poll at the polling station. It said a rule-based process was followed with transparency in preparing the voter list in Maharashtra and there was no irregular practice in deletion of voter names in the state. It told the Congress that due process, including the participation of Congress representatives, was followed in preparing the voter list.

What was Congress’s claim?

The Commission told the main opposition party that its claim of an average of 50,000 voters joining 50 assembly seats between July and November is factually incorrect and misleading. Congress claimed that ‘Mahayuti’ had won 47 out of these 50 seats. According to the Commission, the fact is that during this period only 6 assembly constituencies had a total of more than 50,000 voters, hence the question of winning 47 seats on this basis does not arise.

The Commission also listed around 60 instances of active participation of political parties or candidates during the entire electoral process. The Commission reiterated that political parties, being key stakeholders, are involved at each stage of the election process from ‘roll to poll’ (from preparation of electoral rolls to completion of the voting process).
