There has been a tremendous increase in the country’s pension sector in the current financial year with the introduction of major government pension schemes like National Pension System (NPS) and Atal Pension Yojana (APY). According to the Economic Survey 2024-25 presented on Friday, the total number of total shareholders in the Indian pension sector has recorded a bumper increase of 16 percent on an annual basis by September 2024. With this latest increase, the total number of people investing in pension schemes across the country has now increased to 7.83 crore. Let us tell you that the total number of pension shareholders in September 2023 was 6.75 crore.

6.29 crore Number of beneficiaries of Atal Pension Yojana

The Economic Survey states that the number of beneficiaries of Atal Pension Yojana increased to 6.29 crore among the total pension shareholders recorded by September 2024, which was 5.38 crore in March 2023. It also includes data of the old version of Atal Pension Yojana ‘NPS Light’. Among the total pensioners, the beneficiaries of APY have been 80.3 percent. The Economic Review states that the share of women shareholders in APYs increased to 52 percent in FY 2023-24, which was 37.9 percent in FY 2015-16. According to the survey, the age group of 18 to 25 in APY increased to 45.5 percent in FY 2023-24, which was only 29.2 percent in FY 2015-16.
