DOT has given a new order to telecom companies and sought details of the equipment of Chinese companies used in the network service. The Department of Telecommunications has recently issued a written order asking Airtel, Jio, Vodafone-De and BSNL to detail the Chinese equipment used in their network. This decision of the Department of Telecommunications has been taken with the ongoing tariff war between the existing China and the US. Apart from this, due to the use of Chinese equipment, there has also been a possibility of threat to security.
Tracking of Chinese Equipments
According to ET Telecom report, the government wants to track the use of Chinese equipment in communication and space sector. Many security agencies warned the security threat to the telecom network. Due to the ongoing tariff war between American and China, China can now turn to India. However, the government has already made it clear that Chinese companies cannot make any kind of direct investment in India.
Chinese companies like Huawei, ZTE have already been excluded from 5G network roll out. However, the equipment of these companies is still present in the 4G infrastructure. Apart from this, equipment of Chinese companies has been used in Airtel and Vodafone Idea’s wireless and optical fiber segment as well as BSNL’s 2G service. According to the report, Huawe is given to the Indian telecom companies for the maintenance of an annual network every year by the Indian telecom companies. At the same time, ZTE has to pay less than Huawei.
New decision on sim card
No official information has been shared by telecom companies in this case. Under the new telecom regulations, only Chinese companies are allowed to upgrade replaces and network gear to only old equipment. These companies will not be given any new contract.
Apart from this, the Department of Telecommunications has also taken a big decision on the old SIM card last year. The SIM card of Chinese companies has been directed to replace it. SIM cards of most companies were imported from China at the time of roll out of 2G and 3G. However, SIM cards with 4G and 5G are made in India only.
