China’s online fast fashion brand Shein has re -entered the Indian market after five years. The company was banned through Indian retail company Reliance Retail. According to PTI news, Reliance Retail’s Sheen India Fast Fashion App currently has more than 10,000 downloads on the Google Play Store and is in the top-10 among its counterparts on Apple’s store. Located in Singapore, this brand offers affordable fashion products through its app and online store in India.
Ban was banned in June 2020
According to the news, Sheen was one of the apps that were banned in June 2020 after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology increased tension with China. Nearly three years after being banned in India, Sheen partnered in 2023 with Reliance Retail led by Billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s daughter Isha Ambani. Reliance Retail Ventures Limited (RRVL), through its subsidiary RRL (Reliance Retail Limited), signed a technology agreement with the Roadgate Business Private Limited to develop indigenous e-commerce retail platforms, which is the owner of Sheen.
Piyush Goyal told in a written reply
In December last year, the government informed the Lok Sabha that the sale of Sheen’s branded products has not been banned, although its app has been blocked. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said in a written reply that the purpose of this platform is to create a network of local manufacturers and suppliers who will manufacture products under the brand Sheen and sell them at home and global levels. He said that the Ministry of Textiles consulted with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, which in return consulted the Ministry of Home Affairs and did not object to RRVL’s proposal.
All platform data will remain in India
Goyal said that the license agreement included security that the ownership and control of the platform would always be with RRVL through its full -owned subsidiary company. According to the agreement, at all times, the platform will be hosted on the infrastructure in India and all platform data will remain in India, while Sheen will not have any access or authority to such data. The parties agreeing to the agreement must follow Indian laws and ensure localization of infrastructure and platform data.
