China on Friday formed a new organization to resolve international disputes. Its name is International Organization for Midiation (Iomed). It has been introduced as an alternative to institutions such as the International Court of International Court (ICJ) and Permanent Court of Arbitration.
China’s official newspaper Global Times described Iomed as the world’s first ‘legal organization between governments’ (inter-governal legal organization) to resolve international disputes through arbitration.
Around 30 countries, including China, became the founding members of this organization.
Head office will be in Hong Kong
At a high level ceremony held in Hong Kong, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi formally gave a formal form to the establishment of Iomed.
Indonesia, Pakistan, Belarus, Cuba and Cambodia were among the 30 countries that became the founding members of the organization along with China.
Representatives of 20 international organizations, including about 50 countries and the United Nations, were also present at the ceremony held at Hong Kong status headquarters.

Difference between Iomed and International Court of Justice

Iomed:
- China established it in Hong Kong on 30 May 2025, more influence of China
- 30 countries including Indonesia, Pakistan, Belarus, Cuba, Cambodia
- The purpose of resolving disputes only through arbitration
- The agreement will be voluntary, if no party agrees then there will be no decision
- In this, citizens and international business organizations of other countries along with countries can file cases.
International Court of Justice:
- It is headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands, established in 1945
- It consists of 15 judges, which the UN General Assembly and the Security Council choose for 9 years.
- It works under UN Charter, all UN member countries are members of it.
- It is a formal court that gives binding decisions based on international law
- Only countries can file cases in it
Will work only for mediation
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China has been committed to resolve international issues through long interaction and consent for a long time.
He said that the establishment of Iomed will help to leave the thinking of ‘defeat, I win’.
It aims to resolve disputes between countries and among the citizens of other countries, or between international business organizations. It is designed only to resolve international disputes through arbitration.

China’s influence in Global South may increase
Experts fears that this initiative of China may increase the influence of China in many developing countries and global South. However, there is no clear information about the functioning of this organization.
Due to China’s debt policy and expansionist attitude, questions are being raised on the fairness and credibility of this organization. However, China claims that the organization will follow the United Nations Charter and International Law.
