Fact Check: Recently, a post is going viral on social media, in which it is claimed that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has banned writing on checks with black ink. This post created confusion among people. However, this claim is completely fake.
PIB denied the claim
Press Information Bureau (PIB) refuted this rumor on its social media account ‘X’ saying that it is being claimed that the Reserve Bank of India has banned writing checks with black ink. This claim is completely wrong. RBI has not issued any guidelines regarding any specific color of ink for writing cheques.
What does RBI say about writing a cheque?
As per the Check Truncation System (CTS) of RBI, customers are advised to use permanent and image-friendly ink so that the check can be easily read and avoid tampering. However, RBI has not imposed any restriction or rule regarding use of any particular color of ink.
RBI has also clarified that no changes can be made in important information on the cheque, such as the name of the payee or the amount (in figures and words). If any changes are to be made, a new check will have to be issued. This step has been taken to prevent fraud and ensure the security of transactions.
What is a check?
Check is a negotiable instrument, which is used for transactions in banking. According to the website of HDFC Bank, a check is a document which instructs the bank to pay a specified amount to the person written in the cheque. This is a secure method of payment.
beware of rumors
PIB has appealed to the public to be cautious of false news spreading on social media and get correct information only from official sources. This incident once again reminds us that it is important to check the facts before believing or sharing any information.
