17 people died after a five -storey building collapsed in Karachi city of Pakistan on Friday night. The building was located on Fida Hussain Shekha Road in Lee Market. The authorities had already declared it weak and living, but the recent rains worsened its condition.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Syed Asad Raza said that the structure of the building was further weakened by the rain. According to Dawn’s report, nine people were injured in the accident, six of whom have been discharged after treatment and one is in critical condition.
DIG Raza said that rescue operations are still going on in Baghdadi, Liyari area, where the building was collapsed. It is common for buildings and roofs to fall in Karachi, as security standards are not followed here and substandard construction materials are used. The population of Karachi is more than two crore.

The people and owners living in the building flatly refused to receive the notice. He told the news agency AFP, “We had not received any notice, why will we deliberately stay in such a building with our families?”
Khaskheli said that he had seen cracks in the pillars of the building on Friday morning and asked all the families to get out, but many people did not listen to them.

Deputy Commissioner Javed Nabi Khoso said that more than 50 buildings have been declared insecure in the south district of Karachi and six of them have been evacuated.

Sindh CM sought reports of building collapse
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has sought a complete report of the collapse of this building and other dilapidated buildings from SBCA. Sindh’s local government minister Saeed Ghani said that a high -level committee has been formed which will report the incident by Monday. He expressed grief that the residents did not vacate the building despite giving notice several times and ordered some SBCA officials to suspend.
Leader of Opposition in Sindh Assembly and Ali Khurshidi of Muttahida Qaumi Movement held the Sindh government responsible for the incident and said that the administration in Karachi has completely failed. He said that the Sindh government has been in power for the last 17 years, but it neither enacted a law nor stopped corruption to demolish dangerous buildings. He said that the suspension of the officers is not enough, but the responsible people should take legal action against them.
