In Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo, one train collided with a herd of elephants on Thursday morning and derailed. 6 elephants have died in the incident near the Wildlife Reserve of Habrana, 180 km from Colombo. However, no passenger has been reported injured in this accident.

A police officer said that two injured elephants are being treated. It is not new to collide with the flock of elephants in Sri Lanka, but the police has termed the incident as the biggest wildlife accident ever.

More than 170 people were killed and about 500 elephants were killed in an elephant-human encounter in Sri Lanka in 2024. According to local media reports, about 20 elephants are killed every year in a train collision. Sri Lanka have an estimated 7,000 wild elephants.
