The reason was also special, Sushil Kumar, one of the most successful wrestlers of the country, was born on this day. A name that waved the tricolor on a big stage like Olympics, coming out of the earthen arena. But regrettably, the same name is now associated with a controversy and murder. Today Sushil Kumar is celebrating his birthday behind bars.
Difficult journey to win the Olympics medal from the arena
Sushil Kumar was born on 26 May 1983 in an ordinary family in Najafgarh area of Delhi. Sushil, who has been inclined towards wrestling since childhood, started training at Chhatrasal Stadium at the age of 14. On the strength of struggle and hard work, he soon started being counted among the top wrestlers in the country.
He created history by winning the bronze medal in the 66 kg freestyle category at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. After this, by winning the gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and then the Silver Medal at the 2012 London Olympics, he became the first wrestler in India to have won two Olympic medals. His success at the Olympics made him the star of the Indian sports world.
He was awarded the Arjuna Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Padma Shri. Sushil Kumar had become a role model, whose example was given for every young wrestler, but in 2021, Sushil Kumar’s life took a big turn when his name was involved in the death of a junior wrestler.
Name related to junior wrestler’s death
In fact, Junior Wrestler died in a fight at Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi in May 2021. Sushil Kumar was made the main accused in this case. Delhi Police arrested him after searching for several days. He was accused of murder, criminal conspiracy and kidnapping against him. This incident shook the entire country. Everyone was surprised by an Olympian involved in such a crime. Sushil, once called the pride of India, is now spending his life behind bars. Today on 26 May, wrestling lovers are remembering him on his birthday, some as a great wrestler, some as an example, which suggests that there is a need to restraint and responsibility with success.
