Unified Pension System: The central government has announced a major relief for the employees. Now government employees can decide by 30 September 2025 whether they want to stay in the National Pension System (NPS) or choose Unified Pension Scheme (UPS). Earlier this deadline was 30 June 2025, which has been extended for three months.
Why extended deadline?
The note issued on Monday of the Finance Ministry states that the last date of choosing UPS has been extended to 30 September 2025 in view of the demands from different stakeholders. This exemption will apply to the existing employee, pre -retired and valid married spouse of dead employees.
The Unified Pension Scheme is a new pension scheme implemented from 1 April 2025. In this, pension is guaranteed after retirement, as well as money is also given together. In contrast, there is no definite pension in the National Pension System (NPS), but pension is fixed on the basis of the amount deposited at the time of retirement. Recently, employees who adopt UPS have also been given the benefit of gratuity.
If an employee does not choose UPS till September 30?
According to the often asked questions related to UPS (FAQs), if a government employee does not choose the option of UPS until the scheduled time, it will be believed that it will remain in NPS itself. That is, the chance of UPS will have to be lost. However, now these options can now be selected till 30 September.
Can you be returned to NPS after choosing UPS?
No. Once the decision is finally the decision is final. This cannot be changed. That is, employees cannot go back to NPS.
Who are the characters for UPS?
Government employees can choose UPS.
Employees who are in service on 1 April 2025.
Employees who have retired 31 March 2025 or earlier and fulfill one of these conditions.
Have completed at least 10 years of service.
Retired under Rule 56 (J) (which is not considered punishment).

What will happen to the existing corpus?
If an employee chooses UPS, the money deposited so far will be transferred to the PRAN connected to the UPS. After this the same account will operate under UPS. This decision is a relief news for millions of employees and pensioners who were not able to decide till now they should choose the option of the scheme.
