
Bhushan Ramakrishna Gawai will be the next Chief Justice
Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gawai is scheduled to take oath as the next Chief Justice of India on 14 May. According to tradition, the current CJI Sanjeev Khanna on Wednesday recommended the Union Law Ministry to appoint BR Gawai, the most senior judge of the Supreme Court, the next CJI. CJI Khanna is scheduled to retire on 13 May. Notable decisions of Justice Gawai’s career include removing Article 370 of Jammu and Kashmir and dividing it into two union territories. Who is BR Gawai?
- Born on 24 November 1960 in Amravati, BR Gavai is the son of senior MP late Ramakrishna Gavai.
- BR Gawai Justice KG Balakrishna will be followed by another Chief Justice, who comes from the Dalit community, who served as the Chief Justice from 2007 to 2010.
- 64 -year -old Justice BR Gawai will retire in November 2025. His term as Chief Justice will be from 14 May 2025 to 24 November 2025.
- Justice Gawai’s father Justice Ramakrishna Suryabhan was the founder of the Gawai Republican Party of India (RPI). He was active in Maharashtra politics and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Amravati constituency as a RPI candidate in 1998. He has also worked as the Governor of Bihar, Sikkim and Kerala between 2006 and 2011.
- Justice Bhushan Gawai joined the bar on 16 March 1985. He has served as a government lawyer and then a government prosecutor for the Maharashtra government.
- He was appointed a judge of the Bombay High Court on 14 November 2003. He served there for 16 years before being promoted to the Supreme Court on 24 May 2019.
- Justice Gawai will serve as the Chief Justice for about six months before his retirement in November.
