According to the holiday calendar of the Reserve Bank of India, today, January 14, 2025, there are bank holidays in some parts of the country on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Uttarayan Punyakal, Pongal, Maghe Sankranti, Magh Bihu and Hazrat Ali’s birthday. According to Livemint news, banks will remain closed in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Itanagar, Kanpur and Lucknow. Makar Sankranti is a Hindu festival celebrated across India to mark the beginning of a new agricultural cycle and the end of winter. Uttarayan is mainly celebrated in Gujarat. This festival marks the northward movement of the Sun. Whereas Pongal is a four-day harvest festival celebrated in South India, especially in Tamil Nadu. Devotees express gratitude to the Sun, Mother Nature and the farm animals for the harvest.

Maghe Sankranti is another name for Makar Sankranti. It is celebrated to mark the harvest season in Sikkim. Similarly, Magh Bihu, a harvest festival of Assam, is also known as Bhogali Bihu or Maghar Domahi. Furthermore, today Hazrat Ali’s birthday is celebrated on the 13th day of Rajab in the Islamic calendar. In 2025, this day is being celebrated on 14 January.
