Demonstrations and politics have intensified across the country over the incident of rape of a 21 -year -old Hindu woman on 26 June 2025 in Muradnagar in Kumilla, Bangladesh. While Hindu organizations and human rights organizations performed fiercely in many cities across the country.
On the other hand, there was a dispute over the incident in political parties. Former PM Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League and former PM Khaled Jia’s party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) made the accused Fazor Ali as the leader of each other. Jamaat-e-Islami also targeted BNP in this case.
First Bangladesh Police and Yunus supporters tried to explain the matter to an extramarital affair. But Additional Superintendent of Police of Kumilla AKM Kamaruzamam described it as a case of cruel torture in the investigation. He said that the victim is of simple nature and no evidence of the extraorital affair was found.
After this, anger spread in the minority community. Students of Dhaka University took out a protest march at night. In seven districts, the Hindu community demanded justice by creating a human chain.
After the fall of Hasina’s government, there have been reports of increase in attacks on Hindus, but the situation has become serious due to this incident.
Court ordered removal of video of the incident
The High Court, taking a tough stance in the case, ordered to ensure the safety of the victim.
The bench of Justice Fahmida Kadar and Justice Syed Zahed Mansoor issued this directive after a preliminary hearing of a writ petition on Sunday.
The court ordered the removal of the victim’s videos and photos within 24 hours from all social media and online platforms. Instructed the victim to provide medical and protection.
The protesters said- there should be action on those who explain the extramarital affair
Students of Jagannath Hall protested at Dhaka University. Also raised slogans demanding action. The protesters demand that-
- Fazor Ali and his associates, the main accused of rape, should be immediately punished and a case should be run without any political intervention.
- The video of the rape should be removed from social media, so that the victim’s dignity remains.
- The investigation of the matter should be free and transparent, no party or leader should intervene.
- Action should also be taken against those who weakened this incident as an extramarital affair.
- Security of minority communities, especially Hindu women, should be ensured.
BNP bid- The accused has nothing to do with our party
The incident has become politically sensitive to BNP, as the main accused Fazor Ali was described as the leader of the party.
BNP general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded strict action against the culprits, but the party distanced a distance saying that Fazor Ali had no connection with any of his committee. Abdur Rob, a former member of the local union council, said that Fazor Ali was first associated with the Awami League.
