Chief Advisor Yunus gave an address to the country on Friday evening.
Bangladesh will hold general elections in April 2026. Mohammad Yunus, Chief Advisor in the interim government, announced it on Friday evening.
In the name of the nation a day before Eid, Younus said,

The next general election will be held in the first fortnight of April 2026. For this, the Election Commission will later present a roadmap in detail.
Yunus said that by next year all the reforms required for the election will be completed. Mohammad Yunus was made the Chief Advisor of the Interim Government after Sheikh Hasina’s coup in August last year.

Earlier this year, Yunus had said that elections could be held in Bangladesh by the end of 2025 or the first half of 2026.
The army had asked to hold elections till December this year
Bangladesh’s Army Chief General Waqar-e-Zama addressed an officer at the military headquarters on 22 May. During this time, a conflict between the army and the interim government was openly revealed.
Addressing the officials, the Army Chief clearly stated that the general elections should not be postponed further from December this year. Apart from this, the Army Chief had asked the interim government led by Yunus not to take decisions on the country sensitive national issues.
Apart from the army, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s BNP also reiterated the demand for elections in December, increasing the pressure on Younis. The party had warned that if the government does not make an election roadmap soon and makes it public announcement, then it would be difficult to continue cooperation with the government.

There was also speculation about Yunus resignation amid a conflict with the army. However, Younus did not resign after a meeting with major political parties.
Electoral process like India’s Lok Sabha elections in Bangladesh
Bangladesh also has a similar election process like Lok Sabha elections of India. Here the members of Parliament are elected through the first-paste-the-post system like India. That is, the candidate who will get even one vote, will win.
After the election results, the largest party or coalition MPs choose their leader and become the Prime Minister. The President administered the oath of Prime Minister of the country.
There are a total of 350 seats in the Parliament here. 50 of these seats are reserved for women. There is no election on reserved seats, while general elections are held every five years for 300 seats. In addition to the Lok Sabha in the Parliament of India, there is also a Rajya Sabha, but there is only one House in the Parliament of Bangladesh.

The Parliament of Bangladesh is called the ‘Ethnic Parliament’ or House of the Nation. Its new building was ready on 15 February 1982.
Who is the head of the government in Bangladesh?
Like India, the Prime Minister is the head of the government in Bangladesh. The President is the head of the country, which is elected by the National Parliament. The President is just a formal post in Bangladesh and he has no real control over the government.
By 1991, the President was also directly elected here, but later constitutional changes were made. Through this, the President was elected by Parliament. Sheikh Hasina was the Prime Minister of Bangladesh for 20 years.
