Yannick Sinner
Italy’s Yannick Sinner and Denmark’s Holger Rune both had to take medical timeouts in their Australian Open match, played in temperatures exceeding 32 degrees Celsius, before a 20-minute delay after Sinner’s powerful serve went out of the net at Rod Laver Arena. In the end, defending champion Sinner defeated 13th seeded Rune 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 and entered the quarter-finals. World number one player Sinner was seen placing a cold towel on his face to deal with the heat and also spilled water on his neck several times. With more than a ten-minute delay in the third set, he went to the locker room to seek medical attention.
Sinner will now face eighth seed Alex de Minaur of Australia or unseeded Alex Michelson of America. Italy’s 55th-ranked Lorenzo Sonego defeated American qualifier Lerner Tian 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Now he will face Ben Shelton of America or Gael Monfils of France.
Elina Svitolina entered the quarter finals
In other quarterfinal matches, Novak Djokovic will face Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev will face Tommy Paul. In the women’s category, Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, after trailing 1-4, won 11 out of the next 12 games and defeated Veronika Kudermetova 6-4, 6-1 to enter the Australian Open quarter-finals for the third time. 30 year old Elena has reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the 12th time. She has reached the last eight here for the first time since 2019.
Alina married Gael Monfils of France in 2021 and their daughter Sakai was born in 2022. Svitolina will next face 19th-ranked Madison Keys, who defeated 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Ryabina 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Keys has reached the semi-finals here in 2015 and 2022. He won the title in Adelaide earlier this month.
