Former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly has called Virat Kohli the greatest player of the limited format. Kohli scored a century in the second innings in the opening Perth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but could score only 85 runs in the next seven innings. India lost the series 1-3 in Australia due to poor performance from senior players like Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma.
Ganguly said during the Bengal Cricket Association (CAB) felicitation ceremony for the players of the state that cricketers like Virat Kohli are rarely born. Scoring 81 international centuries in his career is incredible. For me he is probably the greatest white ball player in the world.
The bat did not work against Australia
On Kohli’s struggle after his century in Perth, Ganguly said that he too was surprised that he could not score a century in the remaining matches of the series. Ganguly said that he was really surprised with how he batted after scoring the century in Perth. Earlier he had to struggle, but after scoring a century in Perth he felt that this would be a big series for him.
But he said he thinks it happens. Every player has his own weaknesses and strengths. You know there is no player in the world with whom this would not happen. It depends on how you adjust to your weaknesses while playing against great bowlers over time.
King Kohli will return to form
Ganguly expressed confidence and said that he will be back to his best form in the three-match ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy that follows. He said that he will score runs in this tournament in Indian conditions and while he still feels that Virat Kohli has a lot of cricket left in him, the tour of England will be a big challenge for him. I am not too worried about his form in the Champions Trophy because he is probably the best player in the world in white-ball cricket.
