England Lions team is on Australia tour. England Lions will play an unofficial Test match against Australia’s A team later this month. Australia A team has been announced for this match. New South Wales (NSW) all-rounder Jack Edwards has been named the captain of Australia A’s 12-man youth team for the upcoming four-day unofficial Test match to be held in Sydney from January 30. This will be the first time Edwards will represent Australia A, having played all 37 first-class matches for New South Wales (NSW), averaging 28.21 with the bat and 26.69 with the ball. An unofficial test match will be played between Australia A and England Lions from 30 January to 2 February.
Comeback after 5 years
Australia A team also includes two other fast bowling all-rounders Aaron Hardy and Will Sutherland. Hardie is the only member of the Australia A team to also be in Australia’s Champions Trophy squad. Although he has played only one first-class match this summer after a poor performance with the bat in red ball cricket last year, he has scored a century for Australia A in New Zealand in 2023. 31-year-old Curtis Patterson has also been recalled to the Australia A team for the first time since 2020 and is the oldest player in the team.
Selectors expressed confidence in the youth
Australia’s selectors have placed emphasis on youth and have included only five players from the squad that played two four-day matches with India A in October and November. Among these, Jordan Buckingham, Fergus O’Neill, Josh Phillip, Corey Rocchioli and Brendan Doggett have been given another chance. Marcus Harris, Jimmy Pearson and Nathan McAndrew were not included in the team. Former Test batsmen Matt Renshaw and Peter Handscomb have also not been selected. Cameron Bancroft has been injured in the BBL due to a broken shoulder bone. Michael Neser, who suffered a hamstring injury in the match against Australia A at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), has also not been included in the squad.
The Australia A squad against the England Lions is as follows: Jack Edwards (captain), Xavier Bartlett, Brendan Doggett, Jordan Buckingham, Jaden Goodwin, Aaron Hardie, Fergus O’Neill, Curtis Patterson, Josh Philippe (wk), Corey Rocchioli, Will Sutherland, Tim Ward.
