HIL: Hyderabad Storm beats Surma Hockey 4-3 in shootout

Rourkela. Hyderabad Storms defeated Surma Hockey Club 4-3 in a penalty shootout in a thrilling Hockey India League (HIL) match here on Saturday. Both the teams were tied 1-1 in regular time. Nicholas Della Torre (eighth minute) scored for Surma Hockey Club and Amandeep Lakra (40th minute) scored for Hyderabad Storms. Hyderabad Hurricanes goalkeeper Dominic Dixon’s brilliant performance in ‘sudden death’ helped the team collect the bonus point. Hyderabad Storms will now face Vedanta Kalinga Lancers on Sunday.

In another match, UP Rudraj defeated Delhi SG Pipers 3-1. For UP Rudraj, Florij Vorteboer scored in the 30th minute, Kane Russell in the 43rd and Tanguay Cosins scored in the 54th minute to give their team three points, which took the team to second place in the table. Jake Weighton scored a goal in the 29th minute for Delhi SG Pipers.

WHIL starts from today

On the other hand, Delhi SG Pipers will face Odisha Warriors in the Women’s Hockey India League (WHIL) starting on January 12 in Ranchi. The WHIL matches will be played at the Jaipal Singh Hockey Stadium in Marang Gomke, which has hosted top international tournaments like the FIH Olympic Qualifiers and the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy.

Delhi SG Pipers captain Navneet Kaur said, “We are very excited that the women’s HIL is finally starting and we (Delhi SG Pipers) are playing the first match. He said that he believes that our team is quite young compared to other teams and we will get to learn a lot from them. As the league progresses, he will also get to learn a lot. We have prepared well and will concentrate on one match at a time.
