Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said on Thursday that the hydrogen fueled train engine developed by Indian Railways is the engine with the highest horse power in the world. Vaishnav said this while addressing a plenary session titled “Green Engagement: Contribution of Diaspora to Sustainable Development” of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Conference. Vaishnav told that only four countries in the world make such train engines. “They produce engines ranging between 500 to 600 horse power, whereas the engine manufactured by Indian Railways using indigenous technology has a capacity of 1,200 horse power, which is the highest ever in this category,” he said.
Testing will be done on Jind-Sonipat route
The minister said the first such train is expected to be tested soon on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. He said the engine manufacturing has been completed, but its system integration is currently underway. The Minister said that such technological advancements give confidence to the country and India still has a long way to go in achieving technological self-reliance and needs to be a part of the price chain. Mauritius’ Junior Minister of Foreign Affairs Hambyarajan Narasimhan, who participated in the panel discussion, focused on the challenges of climate change in his country and sought India’s support in providing green technology solutions.
What is hydrogen engine?
At this time the whole world is worried about the environment. There is talk of zero carbon emissions. In such a situation, new methods of transportation are also being discovered, which will result in minimum carbon emissions. In this context, the concept of hydrogen train came to the fore. Diesel or electricity is not used to run this train, rather hydrogen fuel is used. In this, either power is obtained by burning hydrogen in the hydrogen internal combustion engine or the hydrogen fuel cell is reacted with oxygen to run the electric motor of the engine.
