On May 19, 2023, RBI announced the withdrawal of banknote of Rs 2000 from circulation. After this, by 7 October 2023, they could be deposited or replaced in all bank branches. Now this facility is being available only on 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank of India. Also, these notes can be changed from the post office.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra on Thursday informed the Parliament’s Permanent Finance Committee on the status of the Indian economy and financial system. The issue of 2000 rupee notes was prominent in the RBI meeting. On this, Governor Malhotra made it clear that even though the 2000 rupee notes are no longer in trend, he is still legally legal tender and RBI did not invaluate them.
According to the RBI, despite the global challenges, India’s economy remains strong and is doing well. The chairman of the committee, Bhartrihari Mahtab, described the discussion as very meaningful and said that many important issues were discussed in it.
The issue of fake notes was also raised in the meeting. One member said that recently a large number of fake 500 rupee notes have been caught. On this, the RBI Governor admitted concern and said that the government and RBI are constantly monitoring it and are taking necessary steps to stop fake notes.
Questions were also asked about cryptocurrency in the meeting. The governor briefly informed its rules and the current situation. In the end, the committee decided to re -call the governor on 23 or 24 July, so that they could give special information on the review of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC).
