On 23 March 2018, the US imposed 25% tariff on India’s steel products and 10% on aluminum products. It was extended further in January 2020.
India may soon announce a counter -tariff on the US. Because, the US has decided to impose 25% duty on passenger vehicles, small trucks and some automobile components, which could affect India’s export of $ 2.89 billion (about ₹ 24,710 crore).
India has shared this proposal with WTO in an official notification. In a notification given to WTO on Friday (3 July 2025), the government said that India can end the tariff exemption that India is giving to the US to protect its interests.
India will collect ₹ 6,200 million tariff equal to America
The US will collect $ 725 million (about ₹ 6,200 crore) from 25% tariff. India has said that it will also collect the same duty by putting tariffs on American products. However, India has not yet made it clear which American products will take this tariff and how much will be taken.
India is trying to make a trade deal with Washington before the July 9 deadline fixed by US President Donald Trump. After which he has threatened to impose 26% tariffs on all imported Indian goods.
India has indicated that it is ready to cut its high tariff rates for the US, but has not accepted the demands of Washington to open agriculture and dairy areas.
Us is collecting tariffs from 2018 citing National Security
Earlier, India had asked to install retailiary according to the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in response to the US tariff on steel and aluminum. The US is collecting tariffs on these products from 2018 citing its business safety.
According to WTO, this will affect imports of $ 7.6 billion (about ₹ 64,512 crore) of the Indian product, with a duty of about $ 1.91 billion (about ₹ 16,213 crore).
25% duty was imposed in 2018
On 23 March 2018, the US imposed 25% tariff on India’s steel products and 10% on aluminum products. It was extended further in January 2020.
On May 10 this year, the US revised import duty to 25% on both products (aluminum and steel), which is in force from tomorrow i.e. May 12.
India has told the WTO that will eliminate some concessions in response to US security measures on steel, aluminum and related products.
America said- Tariff imposed on seeing national security
Earlier in April, India had talked about talking to the US under WTO’s safe guard agreement after the US decision to introduce new tariffs.
In response, the US told WTO that tariffs were imposed on national security basis, they should not be considered as safe guard measures. However, WTO has considered American tariffs as safe guard measures.
