New Delhi: The first meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) constituted on the proposal of holding simultaneous elections by the Central Government ‘One Nation, One Election’ was held on Wednesday. The objective of this committee is to consider the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, which were recently introduced in the Lok Sabha during the winter session.

According to sources, Law and Justice Ministry officials are today giving detailed information to the committee members about the provisions of these proposed laws. The committee comprises 39 members, which is headed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP PP Choudhary. Chaudhary has previously been Minister of State for Law.

These members of various parties participated

The Joint Parliamentary Committee includes members from all major parties including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from Congress, Sanjay Jha from Janata Dal (United), Shrikant Shinde from Shiv Sena, Sanjay Singh from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Kalyan Banerjee from Trinamool Congress. The membership of the committee has been increased from 31 to 39 as various political parties had expressed their desire to participate in the deliberations on the issue.

What is the purpose of forming the committee?

The committee has been constituted with the aim to consider the possibility of holding simultaneous elections in the country and the legal changes required for it. The committee members will discuss various aspects of Indian politics, including the process of elections at the central and state levels, proposals of the Election Commission and its constitutional aspects.

Besides, the committee also includes other important MPs like former Union ministers Anurag Thakur, Purushottam Rupala, Manish Tewari, and Anil Baluni, Bansuri Swaraj and Sambit Patra. 27 members from Lok Sabha and 12 from Rajya Sabha are part of this committee. (with language input)
