V Narayanan appointed as new chief of ISRO

V Narayanan will be the new chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The Government of India gave this information on Tuesday. V Narayanan will replace Dr S Somnath as ISRO Chairman. V Narayanan will also take charge as Secretary, Department of Space. As per the order of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, V Narayanan will take charge on January 14, replacing current ISRO chief S Somnath. He will hold the responsibility of this post for the next two years or until further notice.

Who is the new chief of ISRO?

V Narayanan is a distinguished scientist with nearly four decades of experience in rocket and spacecraft propulsion. He is a rocket and spacecraft propulsion expert. V Narayanan joined ISRO in 1984 and held various positions before becoming the Director of the Liquid Propulsion System Center (LPSC). During the initial phase, he worked in the field of sounding rockets and solid propulsion of Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) and Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) at Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC).

V Narayanan contributed to the process planning, process control and implementation of the ablative nozzle system, composite motor case and composite igniter case. Presently Narayanan is the Director of LPSC, one of the major centers of ISRO, headquartered at Valiyamala, Thiruvananthapuram, with a unit in Bengaluru. Narayanan has 40 years of experience. He is an expert in rocket and spacecraft operations.

S Somnath retiring on January 14

ISRO’s current chairman S. Somnath took over as ISRO Chairman on 14 January 2022. He is retiring after a tenure of three years. ISRO created history during his tenure. ISRO not only landed Chandrayaan-3 on the South Pole of the Moon, but also sent Aditya-L1 to study the Sun at the Lagrange Point, 15 lakh km above the Earth.
