Foreign Minister S Jaishankar joined Pakistani PM Shahbaz Sharif during a meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Islamabad on 15-16 October last year.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar was held at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting in Islamabad on 15-16 October last year. During this, he addressed the SCO meeting. He said that terrorism and business cannot run together.

Jaishankar said without naming Pakistan-China that all countries need to respect each other’s boundaries.

The Indian Foreign Minister said that if there has been a decrease in friendship between the members of the SCO and the relations with the neighbor have deteriorated, then it should be considered. He said that if there has been a decrease in trust between us, then we need to look inside ourselves and understand the reason for it.

3 important things about SCO …

1. Why SCO needed to make

In 1991, the Soviet Union broke into several parts. After this, the border dispute started due to lack of boundary between Russia’s neighboring countries. This controversy did not take the form of war, for this Russia felt the need to create an organization.

Russia also feared that China should not occupy the lands of small countries, who were members of the Soviet Union bordering their border. In such a situation, Russia formed an organization in 1996 with China and former Soviet countries. It was announced in the city of Shanghai, China, hence the organization was named- Shanghai Five. Initially 5 member countries of this organization included Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan.

When the border disputes between these countries were resolved, it was given the form of an international organization. In 2001, another country Uzbekistan announced to join these five countries, after which it was named Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

2. India refused to join SCO

After becoming SCO, India was also invited to join it. However, at that time India refused to join it.

Meanwhile, China started a campaign to make Pakistan a member of this organization. Due to this, Russia was afraid of China’s growing dominance in the organization. Then Russia advised India to join this organization.

3. After this, India became a permanent member of this organization in 2017. There are 5 more reasons for joining this organization of India…

  • India’s trade was growing with SCO member countries, so to improve relations with this organization.
  • If India has to increase reach in Central Asia, then Shanghai Cooperation Organization is important. The reason for this is that all countries of Central Asia sit together in this organization.
  • India does not have any other organization to present its case on Afghanistan. If India has to decide its role in Afghanistan, then it needs the cooperation of all these countries.
  • India needs the cooperation of SCO countries to eliminate the problem of terrorism and drugs.
  • The countries of Central Asia also needed India in this organization. Those small countries did not want only China and Russia to maintain dominance in the organization. For this, he was seeking India as a balance of power.
