Sunil Gavaskar On Border-Gavaskar Trophy: The prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy played between India and Australia was started in the year 1996. At that time only India’s Gavaskar and Australia’s Allan Border had scored more than 10000 runs in Test cricket only. For this reason, this trophy was named after these two greats. Now the Australian team has won the BGT held in the year 2024-25 by 3-1 and the Indian team has to face a crushing defeat. But now Gavaskar has expressed his displeasure at not being called to present the trophy to the Australian team. The time Allan Border gave the trophy to the Australian team. Gavaskar was present at the cricket ground at that time. But he was ignored.
Sunil Gavaskar said this
Sunil Gavaskar said that I would have been happy to go to the award ceremony. After all, this is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is related to Australia and India. I was on the field itself. I don’t care that the trophy was being given to Australia. They played better cricket and won. Just because I am an Indian. I would have been delighted to present the trophy alongside my good friend Allan Border.
Cricket Australia later confirmed that Sunil Gavaskar was aware that if the Indian team had retained the trophy by winning the Sydney Test, he would have been called to present the trophy to Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah. A Cricket Australia spokesperson said in a statement that we believe it would have been better if both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar had been invited to the stage.
