The world’s largest Muslim country Indonesia has become a permanent member of BRICS. Brazil, which is going to chair BRICS in 2025, made its official announcement on Monday. In response, the Indonesian government welcomed the decision.
Brazil said that Indonesia had got the green signal to join BRICS at the Johannesburg Summit itself in 2023, but the then Joko Widodo government had asked for an extension till the presidential elections.
President Probowo Subianto took office in October 2024 after the elections concluded. After this, the process of becoming a member of BRICS was taken forward.
Indonesia is the 10th country to join BRICS. South Africa had announced the joining of Saudi Arabia along with Iran, UAE, Egypt and Ethiopia in the year 2023.
The process of Saudi Arabia joining BRICS was scheduled to start in February 2024 but at the last moment Saudi Arabia had said that it is not joining BRICS at present.
Brazil will preside over BRICS 2025 The BRICS summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro in July 2025 under the chairmanship of Brazil. This time the theme of BRICS is Global South. It aims to develop payment gateways to facilitate trade between member countries.
Last year in 2024, a meeting of the BRICS organization was held under the chairmanship of Russia. In this meeting, talks were held between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on resolving the border dispute.
In this summit, promoting non-dollar transactions and strengthening the local currency were also discussed. But America was angry with this. Donald Trump had threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on member countries.
BRICS organization was formed in the year 2006 Brazil, China, Russia and India together established BRICS in 2006. However, its official meeting was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia in 2009. After this, in 2010, it was agreed to include South Africa also. Last year the organization expanded and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia became full members. After this, BRICS also came to be known as BRICS Plus.
BRICS has become the third most powerful economic organization in the world, surpassing the European Union (EU). The total share of EU countries in global GDP is 14%, while the share of BRICS countries is more than 27%.
Saudi Arabia is not yet a part of BRICS Saudi Arabia was invited to join BRICS in 2023. After this, it was announced that Saudi Arabia would join BRICS in 2024, but later Saudi Arabia made it clear that it has not yet become a part of it.
In October last year, Russia had withdrawn the statement in which Saudi Arabia was called a member of BRICS. It is believed that due to American displeasure, Saudi Arabia has not yet become a part of BRICS. After this, Turkey took advantage of this and applied to join BRICS.
Pakistan-Türkiye could not be part of BRICS Pakistan had officially applied to join BRICS in 2023. But till now no consensus has been reached regarding Pakistan’s inclusion. It is noteworthy that Pakistan has the support of both China and Russia.
Turkey, another Muslim country, also tried to join BRICS last year, but its entry also could not take place. It was claimed in many media reports that because of India, both Pakistan and Türkiye could not enter BRICS. To include any new country in BRICS, the consent of all the member countries is necessary but due to India’s opposition this condition could not be fulfilled.
During the organization of BRICS Summit 2024, 13 countries were given the status of partner country. Pakistan could not get a place in this also. However, Turkey was given a place among the BRICS member countries.
