The Mughal army attacked this temple in 1762 and destroyed it. However, the then Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh once again renovated it in 1809 after the temple construction. Marble and copper were used in the renovation of the temple. However, in 1830, a layer of gold was climbed on the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. 24 carat gold was used in it. At the same time, the temple was rebuilt in the 90s and more than 500 kg of gold was used. Maharaja Ranjit Singh initially used 7 to 9 layers of gold. However, it was later increased to 24 layer.
Importance of Gold Temple
The importance of this temple increases considerably due to the Sikhs being associated with Guru Nanak ji, the first Guru. Apart from this, the later Sikh Guru was also associated with this Golden Temple. The pond has also been constructed around the Golden Temple, which is called Amrit Sarovar. Its meaning is revealed by its name. Amrit Sarovar means ‘a pond that has nectar’. It is believed that the water of this Amrit Sarovar is sacred, in which the deeds of human beings are purified by taking bath. Not only this, it is also said that the diseases are cured by taking a dip in the Amrit Sarovar.
