Indian writer, lawyer and activist Banu Mushtaq has created history by winning the International Booker Prize for his book ‘Heart Lamp’. Heart lamp is the first book written in Kannada language, which has won the Booker Prize. Deepa Bheshthi has translated the stories of heart lamps into English.
Heart lamp is a collection of 12 small stories. Between 1990 and 2023, in this book written over three decades, Banu Mushtaq has shown the difficulties of Muslim women living in Pitra rich society in South India in a poignant manner.
Mushtaq’s book ‘Heart Lamp’ was chosen from six books around the world for the Booker Prize. This book attracted judges due to the funny, vibrant, colloquial, poignant and bitter style that engraved family and community tensions.
