Electricity bills hiked in up: In Uttar Pradesh, the common people are going to get a shock of inflation soon. Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) is planning to increase electricity rates by 30 percent. According to the news, the electricity rates in UP may soon increase by 30 percent. Power companies have sent a proposal to the Electricity Regulatory Commission for 2025-26. It shows huge losses. To compensate for this, the Commission has been requested. If the commission approves this, the electricity rates can increase by 30 per cent.
According to the report, the power companies have estimated the reduction of Rs 19,600 crore at the current electricity rate in view of the increasing expenses. Electric companies want to increase the current electricity rates by up to 30 percent to compensate the losses withdrawn on the basis of actual income and expenditure. The Regulatory Commission has demanded that in view of the status of power corporation, the increase in rates should be considered.
Officials claimed that there has been no increase in electricity rates in UP for the last five years. Due to this, the revenue deficit has increased by 12.4 percent. The UPPCL, while presenting the data in the Electricity Regulatory Commission, has said that it cannot tolerate any further deficit.
He said that till now the electricity rates are being decided on the basis of the revenue gap to be released in view of the expenses and earnings of the power companies. But power companies say that in fact 100 percent electricity bills are never recovered.
According to officials, in the financial year 2024-25, the recovery of electricity bills of power companies has been done only 88 percent. Due to this, even after the subsidy given by the UP government, this gap has increased from Rs 4,378 crore to Rs 13,542 crore in the year 2023-24.
Similarly, even after getting subsidy from the Uttar Pradesh government in this financial year 2025-26, this deficit is expected to increase to 19,600 crores. There has been a demand to increase the current electricity rates by about 30 percent to compensate for this deficit.
According to the electricity department, about 10 percent of transformers in the state are running poorly. Even after running the recovery campaign, 54.24 lakh consumers have not paid the electricity bill even once. All these consumers owe Rs 36,353 crore.
