A flight going to Spain continued to fly with 205 people without a pilot for about 10 minutes. Actually, the pilot of the aircraft went to the toilet, when suddenly the health of the co-pilot deteriorated, and he fainted.

This was revealed 15 months later in a new report by Spain’s accident investigating agency CIAACH. According to the report, the incident occurred on 17 February 2024 last year at Airbus A321 of Lufthansa.

Flight was going from Frankfurt to Sevile, Spain. At that time, 199 passengers and 6 crew members were present in the aircraft.

Lufthansa conducted internal checks, but did not tell the results

The pilot returned from the bathroom and tried to open the door of the cockpit, but he could not open the door due to being locked inside. The crew member also made a call on Intercom while trying to talk to the co-pilot.

On not receiving the answer, the captain used the emergency code and went inside the cockpit, and controlled the aircraft. The crew and a passenger doctor gave first aid to the co-pilot. Which caused the co-pilot to be conscious.

Investigation revealed that the co-pilot had already had a neurological disease, which he did not know and it was not caught even in his medical test. After this, the medical certificate of the co-pilot was canceled.

Lufthansa told the German news agency that they knew about the incident, and their flight security team also investigated it, but its results were not made public.

Report- Pilot’s unconscious or death incidents rare

The report said that pilot’s unconscious or death incidents are rare during the flight. The European Commission’s 2019-2024 database recorded 287 such incidents.

A 2004 report in the US led to 39 such incidents with American pilots between 1993 and 1998.
