India on Saturday banned the business rules from the land port of North East of fruits, carbonated drinks, processed foods, processed foods, cotton, plastic and wood furniture coming from Bangladesh.

The Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India, issued a notification regarding this.

According to the notification, the import of readymade garment from Bangladesh can now be done only through Nhawa Sheva (Jawahar Port) and Kolkata Port. Entry has been banned from all other land ports (terrestrial ports).

Fish, LPG and Crust Stone Rebate

The consignments coming from Bangladesh will be prohibited from entering through Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, and especially any Land Customs Station (LCS) or Integrated Check Post (ICP) located in Changrabandha and Phulbari in West Bengal.

However, DGFT made it clear that these port ban would not apply to Bangladeshi goods going to Nepal and Bhutan via India.

These restrictions give exemption to fish, LPG, Edible Oil, and Crust Stone. These goods can be imported through these ports. These changes have been implemented in India’s import policy with immediate effect.

India withdrew transpiration facility last month

Earlier, on 9 April 2025, India withdrew the trans shipment facility provided to Bangladesh from 2020. With this facility, Bangladesh could export goods to Middle East and Europe through Indian ports and Delhi Airport.

Bangladesh imported readymade clothes worth $ 38 billion in 2023. Out of this, $ 700 million was imported in India, 93% of which came from Land Port. Indian exporters had been demanding a ban on such imports for a long time.

Yunus had said- Bangladesh is the patron of the Bay of Bengal

Bangladesh government chief Mohammad Yunus said in China a few months ago that the North-East states of India called Seven Sisters are land locks. They do not have a way to reach the sea. Bangladesh is the only guard of the sea in that region. This gives a big opportunity to invest.

This statement was objected by Sanjeev Sanyal, an economist and member of the Economic Advisory Council of PM Modi. Sanyal had said that China is free to invest in Bangladesh, but the appeal made by Yunus to be locked in the northeastern states of India is surprising.

Bangladesh’s attitude changed after Sheikh Hasina’s coup

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country after the rebellion in Bangladesh in August 2024. He took refuge in India. The interim government was formed in Bangladesh and Mohammad Yunus became its head. The India-Bangladesh relations were very strong at the time of Sheikh Hasina, but after that the anti-India activities of Bangladesh increased.

Many Bangladeshi leaders made anti -India statements and targeted Hindu leaders living in Bangladesh. Due to this, the tussle of both countries increased further, besides Bangladesh is constantly strengthening its partnership with Pakistan.
