Prime Minister Trudeau addressed the nation before resigning from the post of PM.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned from the post on Monday evening. He has also left the post of party leader. Before resigning he addressed the nation. Trudeau said he may not be a good choice for the next election.
He said, ‘If I have to fight at home, I will not be the best option in the coming elections.’ He described himself as a fighter. Said I care deeply about Canadians. I will always work for the betterment of the people of Canada.
According to the report, PM Trudeau will remain on the post of Prime Minister until his successor is chosen. The tenure of his government was till October. After the resignation, elections can be held soon. He was the Prime Minister of the country since November 2015.
Justin Trudeau addressed the nation for 30 minutes.
Why did Trudeau have to resign?
- Trudeau was under pressure from his Liberal Party MPs to step down for several months. Because of this, Trudeau was becoming isolated.
- Canada’s Deputy PM and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from the post on December 16. Cristia had alleged that PM Trudeau had asked him to leave the post of Finance Minister and take charge of another ministry. He said that for some time now Trudeau and he were not able to agree on decisions. Chrystia was long considered Trudeau’s most influential and loyal minister. Recently, Cristia had expressed disagreement with Trudeau’s decision to give Rs 15,000 for free to the citizens. He had said that Canada is facing the threat of tariffs on exports to America. In such a situation, one should avoid spending too much.
- Additionally, most of the party’s 152 MPs were pressuring Trudeau to resign. 24 MPs from Trudeau’s party had publicly demanded his resignation in October.
Challenge for Trudeau’s party After Trudeau’s resignation, the Liberal Party does not have any leader who has influence among the general public. The names of Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie, Dominic Leblanc, Mark Kani are ahead in this race.
A special convention is called to elect the top leader of the Liberal Party. This process takes several months. If there is no local leader in the Liberal Party and elections are held in the country, it may cause loss.
now what next Parliament’s session was scheduled to begin on January 27, but Trudeau said it will now take place in March. The Liberal Party may have to face a trust vote as soon as the session begins. The Liberal Party is already in minority. There is little hope of him getting support from other parties in the last phase of the elections. In such a situation, the Liberal government may lose the trust vote in March itself.
Trudeau’s party does not have majority
The Liberal Party has 153 MPs in the House of Commons, the Parliament of Canada. There are 338 seats in the House of Commons. The majority figure in this is 170. Last year, the New Democratic Party (NDP), an ally of the Trudeau government, had withdrawn the support of 25 of its MPs. The NDP is the party of pro-Khalistan Canadian Sikh MP Jagmeet Singh.
Due to the break of the alliance, the Trudeau government was reduced to minority. However, in the majority test held on October 1, Trudeau’s Liberal Party got the support of another party. Because of this, Trudeau passed the floor test. Trudeau’s opposition Conservative Party has 120 seats.
However, New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh has decided to again bring a no-confidence motion against PM Trudeau. Jagmeet Singh had said last month that he would take steps to topple the minority Liberal government next month so that fresh elections can be held in the country. Parliamentary proceedings will begin in Canada from January 27.
Why is there resentment against Trudeau
There is resentment among Canadians against Trudeau due to continuously increasing inflation. Apart from this, Trudeau has been facing political challenges for some time due to the rise of fundamentalist forces in Canada, the increasing number of immigrants and the situation created after Covid-19.
In an Ipsos survey conducted in October last year, only 28% of Canadians said Trudeau should contest re-election. According to the Angus Reid Institute, Trudeau’s approval rating has fallen to 30%. On the other hand, the number of people who dislike him has reached 65%.
According to many surveys conducted in the country, if elections are held in Canada, the Conservative Party may get majority, because the public is troubled by rising inflation.
These 5 names can replace Trudeau
Melanie Jolie- He is the Foreign Minister in the Trudeau government. The dispute with India started during his period. For this, Jolie received both praise and criticism. She is a staunch supporter of Trudeau and supported him till the last moment. Trudeau can make him his successor.
Christy Clark- She was the Premier of the state of British Columbia from 2011 to 2017. Had given statements several times regarding Trudeau leaving the post. Seeing Trudeau’s popularity declining, he had expressed his desire to replace him in October 2024. He said that Trudeau is tired now.
Mark Carney- Has held the post of Governor in both Bank of Canada and Bank of England. He lacks political experience, but has great credibility in the world. Over the past few weeks he has contacted several Liberal MPs for support.
Chrystia Freeland- Chrystia, who resigned as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister last month, is an important name in Canadian politics. Due to his knowledge of economic matters, he has great reputation at the international level also. However, Trudeau’s abandonment of credibility at the last moment may also go against him.
Dominic Leblanc- Senior minister of the Liberal Cabinet and very close to Trudeau. However, they fall a bit weak in front of Freeland and other names. He is not even a big face at the national level but being close to Trudeau may work in his favor.
