Former Defense Secretary Ajay Kumar has been appointed as the new chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The appointment was made by President Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday through an official order. The post of UPSC President was vacant after the completion of Preeti Sudan’s term on 29 April.

Who is the new president of UPSC?

Ajay Kumar is a 1985 batch retired officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and belongs to Kerala cadre. He served as the Secretary of Defense from 23 August 2019 to October 31, 2022. According to the rules, Ajay Kumar can remain in this constitutional post till October 2027, as the term of UPSC president is six years or 65 years of age.

UPSC- Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) conducts civil service examinations for selection of officers for prestigious services, a chairman and a maximum of ten members. Currently, the posts of two members in the Commission are vacant.

Former bureaucrat Anuradha Prasad took oath as UPSC member

Former bureaucrat Anuradha Prasad was also sworn in as a UPSC member. He is the former secretary of the Inter-State Council Secretariat under the Ministry of Home Affairs. He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Lieutenant General Raj Shukla (retired), senior most member of the Commission. Anuradha Prasad is an officer of the 1986 batch Indian Defense Accounts Service (IDAS). As secretary of the Inter-State Council Secretariat, he handled the center-state and inter-state relations and played an important role in agreening on many complex and sensitive issues, resulting in major policy changes and infrastructure and other projects accelerated. After his retirement, Prasad also served as a member of the Delhi Government’s Police Grievance Authority. With the appointment of Anuradha Prasad, the posts of two members in UPSC are still vacant.
